As a well-known historic and cultural city in the northeast of China, Jilin is the only city in China that has a name doubled as the name of a city and of a province. Powdery frost, snow sports, Lake Songhua, the ancient city of Ula, the cluster of ancient temples in Beishan, the folk customs of the Manchu and Korean ethnic groups and others constitute the very unique characteristics of this northern city. Surrounded by mountains and rivers (lakes), the city of Jilin is incredibly picturesque, especially in the winter. Jilin's powdery frost and snow, Guilin's mountainous scenery, Yunnan's Stone Forest and the Three Gorges along the Yangtze River are fondly known as the four natural wonders of China. As a gazetted national scenic spot, Lake Songhua is one of the largest artificial lakes in the country that attracts many swimmers in the summer and skiers in the winter. Moreover, the city has a number of scenic spots to offer the tourists such as the urban parks around Longtan Hill and Zhuque Hill.
