Peking Duck has the reputation of being the most delicious food Beijing has to offer. Some find it a bit too greasy, but others get hooked after one taste. In any case, a Peking Duck dinner is usually a fixed item on any Beijing tour itinerary. Eating Peking Duck is also one of the two things you are absolutely supposed to do while in Beijing. The other one is climbing the Great Wall.
The place that offers the best Peking Duck is the Quan Ju De Restaurant, which has outlets at Qianmen, Hepingmen and Wangfujing. It was established 130 years ago and, if you count from the time when founder Yang Renquan began his duck business, it is 160 years old.
At Quan Ju De, ducks are immersed in condiments unique to the restaurant and are roasted directly over flames stoked by fruit-tree wood. The best roasted duck is date-red, shining with oil, but with a crisp skin and tender meat.
The chef than cuts the meat into thin slices, each having a piece of skin. Then the meat is served with very thin pancakes, Chinese onions and special sauce. The way to eat it is to coat the thin pancake with sauce, slap on a few pieces of meat and roll up the pancake. Chopsticks are optional: it is much easier just to grab the thing with your bare hands.
Another famous restaurant offering Peking duck is the Bian Yi Fang (Cheap Restaurant), which opened in 1855, nine years earlier than Quan Ju De. At Bian Yi Fang, roasting is done in an enclosed container fueled with crop stalks. There are now hundreds of restaurants serving Peking Duck

We eat at Beijing Duck once a month because
we belong to a social organization that meets here. The food is
above average. Since we have been dining here for about 5 years,
we have tried many entrees. Our favorites include Orange Flavored
Beef and General Gau's Chicken. Tom likes the Szechuan Buddha
Vegetable Delight. The meals have varied over the years as the
cooks change, but this remains a good choice for Chinese food.
The service is always quick, the restaurnat is clean, and we never
feel rushed.
Note: The chef has obviously changed again! The last time we were
there we ordered Chicken with Cashews and there was very little
celery in it. The pieces of chicken were much larger, instead
of the tiny cubes we had the first time. This dish is now rated
much higher than before.

Duck Chang's is the first fully non smoking Chinese Restaurant in Northern Virginia. We are aware that some of our patrons enjoy smoking, therefore, our location in Alexandria, Peking Duck Restaurant, still offers both smoking and non smoking seating. Duck Chang's is located in the heart of Annandale, Virginia. From the Beltway 495, take exit 6 east towards Annandale. Peking Duck Restaurant is located on Rt. 1 Alexandria. From the Beltway 495, take exit 1 south towards Ft. Belvoir. Once on Rt. 1, travel about 10 minutes on Richmond Highway (Same as Rt. 1) and pass Beacon Mall. The restaurant is 1 1/2 miles from Beacon Mall on the left hand side.
